Houston| The "Cougar" mascot was adopted in 1927 when coach John Bender came to Houston from Washington State University who's mascot was the Cougars. When he arrived the student body was searching for a name for their newspaper. Coach Bender suggested that they call it the Cougar to symbolize grace, power, and pride. The name stuck with them ever since. |  |
