Uniquely shaped drivers give golfers better accuracy off the tee

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past year or so, you’ve probably noticed that the new generation of drivers are dramatically changing in shape. You have the square head drivers like the Callaway FT-i and Nike SasQuatch Squared, and also the new triangular shaped driver from Titleist dubbed the 907 D1. Geometrically shaped drivers are golf’s new “in thing”, but most people don’t know or understand why. The reason for the shape changing in today’s drivers is the result of three letters that are revolutionizing the game of golf, MOI or Moment of Inertia. Golf’s top manufacturers are coming out with drivers that have non traditional shapes in order to achieve the highest possible MOI. MOI is a term that’s been thrown around pretty loosely in the golf world over the past couple of months and in my opinion hasn’t been explained very well. For all of you who don’t know what MOI is, here’s a basic definition.

MOI (Moment of Inertia) – a clubheads resistance to twisting when contact is made with the golf ball.

So why do you want a driver with high MOI? The answer is simple, if your driver has a high resistance to twisting during your swing it’ll be more likely to keep the clubface in line allowing you to make solid contact with the ball. Square and triangular shaped heads allow the weight to be moved the furthest away from the clubface to allow for maximum MOI. Want it put in simpler terms; you’ll hit the ball straighter. Personally I don’t enjoy donating golf balls to Mother Nature and I’m sure you feel the same way.

If you have a handicap of 8 and above, a high MOI driver will definitely help improve your game. You’ll hit more fairways and the end result of your miss hits wont be as bad (or embarrassing) as they normally would be. I’ve heard a lot of “traditional golfers” downplay the new generation of drivers on their appearance alone. I’m telling you don’t knock it till you try it. Next time you’re at a demo day hit a non-traditional driver like the FT-i or the SasQuatch Squared and I bet you’ll be surprised. They are extremely stable during your swing and also have a great feel to them.

Have faith in new technology people, change is good. Why keep hitting the same inconsistant shots over and over again with your old, outdated driver. I speak from experience, I absolutely love my Callaway FT-i because it gives me the best control I have ever had over my drives. I am convinced that a high MOI driver is one of the best game improvement tools for the amateur golfer.
