Tiger Woods made a dramatic return to golf by clinching the Arnold Palmer Invitational title for the sixth time. The win is Tiger’s first big win since being sidelined by a knee injury and surgery last year. Tiger’s improved knee wasn’t the only new equipment on the course – his bag was brimming with updated clubs and golf balls from Nike. The combination of new gear and a refreshed mind and body mean Tiger is poised to make a stunning comeback.
Everybody knows Tiger Woods had his knee fixed, but what about his golf equipment, surely that would also be new? Indeed, Tiger Woods was playing a new ball and new clubs. The ball is Nike’s new ONE Tour , a premium 4-piece, solid core, urethane ball designed for advanced players seeking maximum feel and spin (read my article on the Nike ONE collection ). Tiger’s driver is the new Nike SQ Dymo , a smaller but highly optimized driver, a departure from the grossly oversized drivers of years past and a muted color scheme and design. Seeing how Tiger was involved in its design and modification, perhaps the new club is a reflection of Tiger’s new perspective on life and golf thanks to a new baby , a debilitating injury, and a reinvigorated sense of focus and purpose?
Tiger is also playing the new Nike Victory Red TW Blades , which feature a more traditional muscle back design that promotes workability, ultimate control and shot shaping – all characteristics demanded by Woods himself. When asked about the new irons Tiger responded, “I like the new VR Blades because of the consistent feel throughout the bag, how good it looks in a playing position and my workability.” Said Woods, “I can shape the ball both ways, change my trajectory, do whatever I need to do to hit the ball closest to the hole and be as efficient as I can throughout the round. That’s ultimately what you want to have happen.”
