TaylorMade announces the launch of their newest irons for 2011 — the Burner 2.0 Irons Sets and Burner 2.0 Individual Irons . Mark King, TaylorMade President and CEO, unveiled the new Burner 2.0 irons during a live webcast filmed in front of the company’s sales team. The new irons were kept secret, although rumors of a “Darth Vader” like club set emerged because of the Burner Black PVD (physical vapor deposition) finish and details resembling carbon fiber composite. Don’t bother checking the TaylorMade site because we’ve condensed all the need-to-know facts into this short article, giving you the edge the next time you talk shop on the golf course. Keep reading for the good stuff!
Burner 2.0 Irons: Changes & Benefits
Part of the launch event was Bret Wahl, Senior Director of Iron Research & Development at TaylorMade, highlighting the improvements over the original Burner irons sets. For you convenience I have provided a summary of the changes and the benefits in an easy to read chart and even a few diagrams — hooray for pictures!

CHANGE |
BENEFIT |
|
More focus on each club |
A set is only as good as its individual pieces, so each iron does its own job and is not forced to overlap – meaning your 3 iron performs like a 3 iron and not a 2-4 club |
|
Thin faces on long irons |
More reaction means higher ball speeds for greater distance |
|
Thick faces on short irons |
Emphasizes accuracy and control, and the added weight directly behind the ball produces incredible feel |
|
Redistributed weight |
Clever engineering allowed weight to be pushed out and down (heel-toe weighting) for added stability and forgiveness |
|
Softer multi-material badge on short irons |
Better vibration dampening so your shots feel better and hands tingle less |
|
Hidden stiff nylon layer on long irons |
Provides a more pleasing sound that can be instantly recognized on good shots |
|
Re-shaped and re-positioned ICT (inverted cone) |
Helps increase ball speed but also produces greater consistency, even on off-center hits |
|
Thin soles on short irons |
Accommodates vertical-biased swings |
|
Wide soles on long irons |
Accommodates flatter, more powerful swings |
|
Different kick points on each shaft |
