Introducing the Vapor Iron Family

Powered by Modern Muscle Technology Building a better iron starts with listening to the voice of the athlete. At The Oven, Nike’s meticulous process of collecting insights and implementing feedback from the world’s best athletes has been the driving force behind the development of the Vapor Iron family and Modern Muscle. “We had this idea, if we moved the CG towards the center of the face that it would have more impact and more mass right behind the golf ball. And it worked. I was able to hit that ball a little bit further, it came off more solid, and the amazing thing is the ball flew better.” - Tiger Woods Modern Muscle technology is available in all three members of the Nike Vapor Iron Family – the Vapor Pro, Vapor Pro Combo and Vapor Speed. Because no matter what conventional wisdom might say, there’s always better. Tiger’s future irons, the Nike Vapor Pro Irons are positioned as the replacement for the traditional blade. These irons produce approximately 1.7 yards more distance and feature an MOI that is ten percent higher than the VR Pro Blades they replace. The main technological advantage provided by the Vapor Pro design is what Nike calls a “modern muscle.” This design incorporates tungsten plugs that significantly improve the CG location of the club by moving it closer to the center of the clubface. Unlike traditional blade designs, which feature a CG that’s closer to the hosel, the Vapor Pro and its modern muscle design provide the best results when the ball is struck in the middle of the clubface and produces improved results on shots struck off-center. The Nike Vapor Pro Combo Irons, which fit nicely between the Pro and the Speed, also utilize the modern muscle design to provide a combination of precision and ball speed. Like the Vapor Pro, the Pro Combo irons feature a CG closer to the center of the face, making them both more precise and more forgiving than past Pro Combo models. The Nike Vapor Speed Irons are aimed at players who want maximum distance and forgiveness, simply. Nike’s modern muscle design moves the CG closer to the center of the clubface and lower and deeper in the clubhead to provide a combination of this new CG location with very thin clubfaces and lighter, longer shafts. The result, high launching shots with maximum carry distance. Check out all of the Vapor Irons at Discount Golf World.

Adjustability Made Easy: The New TaylorMade SLDR Driver

The adjustable driver has been around for awhile, and every major manufacturer has embraced the technology, at least to some degree. TaylorMade has been committed to adjustable drivers and moveable weight technology since 2004, but the benefit of adjustability has been lost to a vast number of golfers who have no desire to delve into the complexities of tinkering with loft, lie, face angle and weighting. Taken to its extreme, adjustability for the average golfer may seem just a bit gimmicky. For those who haven’t embraced the adjustability craze, and just as importantly, for those who have, the new TaylorMade SLDR (“Slider”) Driver offers quick and easy adjustability that just about anyone can understand—and from which everyone can benefit. It’s Here: TaylorMade R1 Black Driver

Black is the new black! TaylorMade launched the new R1 Black Driver today and it is, well, unbelievably cool. The R1, released earlier in 2013, introduced us to the concept of an adjustable driver that can be fine tuned to fit anyone’s game. From Tour pro to beginner, the R1 offered one club head that could be adjusted to everyone’s swing. The R1 instantly became the number one driver on the PGA Tour and found its way to millions of amateur’s bags, as well. So what’s new with the R1 Black Driver, you ask? Technically speaking, nothing at all… except the finish–it’s black. And contrary to what you might think, that is a very big deal.   There are countless golfers around the world who feel a driver ought to be black, not white. There is genuine science behind the white phenomenon; that being the optical illusion created by the contrast between white crown and black face that makes the club head appear huge, inspiring confidence. Fair enough, but for those among us who want the aggressive look of all black, then who cares what the science says. Black is back—and it has some upgrades with this new R1 Driver. The glossy finish is truly beautiful and TM incorporated the R1 alignment graphics on the crown, but with a significant difference. Whereas the “face paint” graphics are almost overwhelming on the original R1’s white matte finish, they are subtlety done on the R1 Black, offering a distinctive look that adds to the uniqueness of the club. The graphics are, in a word, cool. And so is this driver. You can pre-order the TaylorMade R1 Black Driver at DGW today.

The Nike Tiger Woods TW ’14 Golf Shoe Is Here

Tiger Woods picked up his 4th victory of 2013 and the 78th of his career at the Tournament Players Club at Sawgrass on Mother’s Day. The season is still young, but in winning over ½ of his PGA Tour starts thus far, Tiger is setting a torrid pace that leaves many speculating that 2013 will be his best season ever.   Tiger captured his second Players Championship while wearing his new Nike Tiger Woods TW’14 Golf Shoes. The TW’14s further enhance  the fit, feel and function first developed with the TW’13. Like the previous version, the new TW’14 utilizes Nike Free technology designed to mimic and conform to the natural motion of the foot. The innovative outsole allows the golfer to keep contact with the ground longer to better harness the energy of the foot to the shoe, and the shoe to the ground. A new upper offers improved ventilation achieved through the use of strategically-located perforations that increase breathability without compromising waterproof protection.   “With this shoe, we worked diligently to take every detail to a new level,” said Tobie Hatfield, Athlete Projects Innovator at Nike. “In the TW ’14, Tiger wanted more stability with mobility and we’ve accomplished that by using Nike’s Dynamic Flywire Technology which moves with him, but stabilizes his foot when he swings. We also increased breathability of the shoe by using a full mesh tongue.”   The new TW ’14 also has a new color available-Cool Grey with Vivid Blue and Venom Green accents, which will be available August 1, 2013.   The Nike Tiger Woods TW ’14 Golf Shoes are available for pre-order today at DGW.

Tiger Woods and Nike Ready for The Masters

The Masters begins in just two weeks and every golf fan knows which golfer will be favored to win. Tiger Woods recently regained World Number One status over fellow Nike athlete, Rory McIlroy. With his third victory in five PGA starts this year,  Tiger appears primed to add a fifth Green Jacket to his collection. Like Jack Nicklaus before him, Tiger seems always to be at his best at Augusta National, the home of The Masters. For even the casual fan, there’s just something about the year’s first Major that heightens interest in the game. It’s a special place, Augusta National, and the Masters is a special tournament that breeds special champions—like Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods. To commemorate the Masters, Nike introduces a special edition shoe. The Tiger Woods TW13 Limited Edition Golf Shoes are available today at DGW. The Limited Edition TW13 is Tiger’s shoe, made to his exacting specifications, and decked out with deep green, yellow and red accents on the outsole, eye-stay and tongue. Modeled after the Nike Free running shoe, the TW13 is known for its superior feel, fit and function—and Tiger wears them for every round. The TW13 may not be the only reason Tiger has regained his Number One position in the world, but they are distinctive enough, just like the Masters, to inspire this special version for a limited time and in limited quantities. Nike Covert Driver Preview

The new Nike VR_S Covert Driver will hit the market in February 2013, and without having seen an actual demo as yet, here are the first impressions.   There are two main features distinctively new to the Covert Driver; three if you count the red finish. First, the driver has a large hole in the sole, what Nike is referring to as a High Speed Cavity Back. Nike scooped a hole from the back of the sole and shifted the displaced weight to the heel and toe areas, creating advanced perimeter weighting that offers increased distance on off center hits. With drivers having maxed out COR long ago, what Nike has done is look for a way to increase distance otherwise. Combined with Nike’s NexCor technology (Nike’s term for variable face thickness), the perimeter weighting design prevents noticeable loss of distance on mis-hits. In fact, Nike tells us the advanced NexCor Tech in the Covert Driver expands the “hot zone” by 45%.   The second new feature is the adjustable hosel—the Nike “FlexLoft “system. This is really cool. There is a variable range between 8.5 and 12.5 degrees. Loft and face angle can be adjusted independently to deliver 15 combinations. This will allow golf retailers to stock one head that can be independently adjusted and tested on site (or by the golfer on the range) to arrive at a custom-like fit.   The new Covert Driver is available with a 460cc head, as well as a pear shaped 430cc Tour version for the low handicap player. Both come with a stock, real deal Mitsubishi Kuro Kage shaft–50 grams for the VR_S Covert and 60 for the Covert Tour. Nike claims they have fine-tuned the sound of these drivers so they’re not too loud or harsh but offer a solid “thump” at impact instead.   Nike’s taking this tech into its fairway wood and hybrid designs, as well. All will be available February 8, 2012.   Paul Casey was the first Nike Athlete to put the Covert in his bag. Recently signed Nike Athletes Nick Watney and Kyle Stanley have also bagged the Nike Covert. You can pre-order the Nike Covert or Covert Tour today at DGW.
