TaylorMade RocketBladez Innovation: It’s Real and It’s Here

For weeks golf geeks everywhere have been speculating about TaylorMade’s teaser ad featuring Sergio Garcia and a tag line suggesting he was about to get “freakishly longer.” Today, TaylorMade released its “secret” to the public with the announcement of the new RocketBladez Irons. TaylorMade says this new design is a “once-in-a-lifetime innovation that revolutionizes iron performance.” Read the rest of this entry »

Play Golf All Year With New Nike Outerwear

Fall is here, and for those who live in a four season climate, or in a place where the temperatures fluctuate greatly, that means some of the best golfing weather of the year. Cool, sunny days and firm, fast conditions make for great golf. There was a day when most of us would hang up our clubs following Labor Day and not play again until late March or early April. The reason we used to quit when the weather turned? There was no such thing as cold weather apparel–at least for the golfer. Anyone who played cool or cold weather golf back in the day knows that the clothing was simply not conducive to enjoying a round. Heavy, bulky sweaters and jackets made swinging a golf club a chore. A lack of wind-resistant fabric allowed the wind to cut through even heavy wool sweaters, dissipating the warmth offered by all those layers.   Today, golfers are fortunate to have lightweight, warm, breathable and wind resistant fabrics that make golfing in cooler, and even cold temperatures a much more enjoyable pastime. Consequently, there is no longer any reason to hang up the clubs for the winter. Nike Golf wants you to keep playing golf–all year long. Read the rest of this entry »

Tiger’s Magic Nike Shoes

Last week we were trying to decide what more we could do in anticipation of the launch of the new Nike TW ’13 golf shoe on June 8, 2012. The new shoe features some remarkably advanced technology, and although we’ve featured the shoes in a banner and “Staff Picks” tease, we were looking for something to punch up the ad campaign a bit. I suggested that we claim the shoes have magic properties that would make everyone play like Tiger. That claim was rejected based on some kind of vague legal technicality. The shoes are quite remarkable, though not magic, but I needed a hook. Read the rest of this entry »

Longer Off the Deck With New Fairway Tech

You may recall that a few weeks ago I promised (or threatened, depending on your perspective) to discuss the remarkable advancements in fairway woods available this year. The new fairway woods (call them fairway metals if you wish—I won’t) are so truly “new” both in design and distance claims, I thought this would be easy to write, until I began wondering why fairway woods were suddenly stealing some of the driver distance marketing thunder. What’s so new in 2012? Well, I’d heard various theories as to why fairway woods got hot, but most of these theories were idiotic   So, I went to work researching the one rumor that had been given me by a reliable source as the reason fairway woods have taken such a big jump in distance this year: that the USGA restrictions on the permissible spring-like effect of a club face, or the Coefficient of Restitution (COR), do not apply to club heads under 410cc. Revolutionary GPS Systems Offer Time Travel!

Now that I have your attention, let me confess that time travel is not available through GPS…not yet anyway. I thought about this today, though, as I was contemplating what to write regarding the new futuristic GPS products available from both Garmin and Bushnell.   If you’re old enough, you’ve seen any number of science fiction movies, or even old commercials, that predicted the technological marvels to be made available in the future. These were unintentionally hilarious, although only in retrospect. At the time, we watched those movies and commercials, awestruck by the imagined possibilities of the future. By and large, though, these predictions and imaginings were way off the mark. Time travel, as far as I know, is not yet available. Neither is a host of other promised cool future stuff. I’m still waiting for my robot that will mow the yard; my personal jet pack (the one that doesn’t cost $1,475,000.00 and involve imminent risk of death); my cloak of invisibility; my x-ray vision glasses (the ones I ordered when I was 12 DID NOT WORK AS ADVERTISED!); and, my George Jetson treadmill. Ok, so I have that last one, but it is so not fun. Read the rest of this entry »

Nike Golf Limited Edition Products Commemorate Golf’s Greatest Moments

April is just around the corner and for even the casual golf fan that means only one thing: The Masters is coming. It’s not the oldest Major championship, and it may not have the deepest field, but The Masters is universally revered by pros and amateurs alike as their favorite. The Masters is loved in part, but only in part, because it’s the first Major of the year. Far more important is the location of the event, Augusta National, and the unique traditions that have developed over the years since Clifford Roberts and Bobby Jones first decided to hold their invitational tournament in 1934. And the most identifiable part of Masters Tradition involves the yellow Masters flag and the ubiquitous green which one finds well, everywhere in Augusta during Masters Week. In anticipation of the tournament, Nike will release three limited addition items to commemorate the year’s first Major. Read the rest of this entry »
