Callaway Golfs Justin Timberlake Opens LEED Certified Golf Course
Entertainment mogul Justin Timberlake, a Callaway Golf “Icon,” is set to open America’s first LEED Platinum Certified golf course in Memphis, Tennessee. The super-green golf course, called “Mirimichi,” is set to open in late summer 2009 and will receive the Audubon International’s Classic Sanctuary certification. The course will be the “greenest” golf destination in the country. Justin Timberlake has invested over $16 million into the project so far.
Justin Timberlake is sponsored by Callaway Golf, and uses the following equipment:

What is LEED Certified?
LEED certification involves extensive renovations of existing properties or strict, demanding guidelines for new construction. Platinum is the highest level of certification, but resulting projects have a massively reduced impact on the environment by recycling, re-using, and reducing resources. LEED certified green projects also use alternative energy sources like the sun, which will power the golf carts on Timberlake’s new golf course.
Why Going Green is Good
When you think about a golf course it makes sense to build in green since the land occupies such a large area and, while visited by many people, requires a lot of maintenance such as water, fertilizer, electrical power, and doesn’t directly impact the majority of the surrounding community (besides just being there if somebody wants to golf). I think that’s why Timberlake decided to spend the extra time and money and create an open space that was more like native, wild land instead of a resource-intensive recreation spot for a handful of users.
